Designs By Sundown Celebrates 30 Years of Beautifying Colorado’s Residential Landscapes
March 30, 2015 – Denver, Colorado – In April of this year, award-winning landscape architecture, construction, and maintenance firm Designs By Sundown will begin a year-long celebration of 30 years in business. Founded by Littleton native Michael Hommel in 1985, Designs By Sundown’s focus continues to be providing unparalleled craftsmanship and exceptional, responsive service to home-owners throughout metro Denver. Under Michael’s leadership, the company has grown from two employees working out of his parents’ garage, to more than 185 employees servicing the Colorado Front Range.
Designs By Sundown’s story really begins as Michael’s summer job of working on sprinklers in high school and college. After graduating from Colorado State University, under the name “Sundown Irrigation,” he began installing sprinkler systems in the just-developed Highlands Ranch, while he considered long-term job opportunities. The business quickly blossomed, however, as satisfied clients referred “Sundown,” as they called it, to neighbors and friends. Realizing the potential for growth in Denver’s spreading residential communities, Michael made the pivotal decision to offer complete landscape design, installation, and maintenance services and changed the company’s name to Designs By Sundown in 1990.
Today, Designs By Sundown is as an industry leader and award-winning firm regularly recognized by organizations including the Professional Landcare Network, the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado, the Home Builders Association; and published in magazines including Sunset, Better Homes and Garden and Luxe. Beyond the design and construction accolades, Michael is most proud of the recognition the company has received for ethical business practices, including being named South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year in 2008 and receiving the Colorado Ethics in Business Award from the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business.
To commemorate their 30th year in business, Designs By Sundown broke ground in March on a new design studio and office facility in Littleton. The 7,200-square-foot facility, excepted to open in the fall of 2015, is being developed on nine acres along Santa Fe Drive. Michael and his staff plan to take full advantage of their new space by using the grounds as a combination work and product showcase, allowing future clients to see the company’s innovative work first-hand.
As Designs By Sundown moves into their 30th year of business, the firm’s focus remains true to its roots. “Our goal is to beautifying Colorado’s finest homes one landscape at a time through exceptional design and outstanding customer service,” remarked Michael Hommel.
